Clocks go forward 24th September and after the winter we have had, everyone will be racing out to the garden. A nice relaxing activity for the summer, or is it? With that comes all the gardening injuries! We at MOTUS want to help you to avoid these so you can enjoy the season. If you do have some niggles, do pop in and we can help you with this so you can enjoy your spring.

Here are 3 of the most common injuries from gardening and tips to avoid them.

Back PainGardening

Back pain can usually be aggravated by heavy digging and bending down to weed. Your back can become sore, usually still the following day, after a big day in the garden.

Solution: Avoid a back strain by taking regular breaks and rotate from heaving tasks to lighter ones throughout the day. A good squat technique is also important to protect your back from repetitive bending. Try to limit yourself to 30-45 minutes per task.

Knee Pain

When kneeling for a long time (weeding or planting) can cause irritation to a small sack of fluid in your knee. This is called a bursa and usually stops friction between your bones and tendons. When kneeling on the ground this can become inflamed and causes pain and swelling.

Solution: Using a foam pad under your knees can help to reduce the pressure. Again, changing tasks and standing up every 10 minutes can also help.

Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain is a common complaint following a day of hedge clipping or pruning overhead. This can cause irritation to the tendons within your shoulder and cause pain when reaching overhead or putting your hand behind your back.

Solution: It can be very easy to get into the zone when clearing but try and spread out your heavy tasks over a few days.

 

To avoid injuries, we have a few key points for you to take away:

  • Warm up: 15 minute walk / stretches before you start
  • Stand up / stretch every 15 minutes
  • Short bursts of 30 to 45 minutes at a time
  • Pot plants at waist height to limit kneeling and reaching
  • Ask for help with heavy loads

Deedee studied Physiotherapy at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen and worked in the NHS within a range of settings. She also worked in a private practice prior to moving out to New Zealand. Deedee also delivers our Falls Prevention Program. Deedee has a wide range of experience from children to elderly and is looking forward to continuing to work in the Ashburton area.
